Remove the Tape: Carefully peel away the painter’s tape from around the joint while the sealant is still wet.
Over time, silicone sealant around tiling, baths and sinks can often become mouldy and ineffective. Particularly if the sealant is damaged or worn away and water gets in. So, it helps to replace it every once in a while. But removing it isn’t as simple as it may seem and can be time consuming with traditional tools. Until now as SMART have developed the perfect silicone removal solution known as the Wide Scraper SMART blade. What is the Wide Scraper Blade?If you chose to use sealant remover, this helps to soften and dissolve the old sealant before you remove it, making the peeling off a much easier task. However, using a scraper or remover tool is still advisable. Step 4. Get rid of any leftover silicone sealant residue Dampen a Cloth with Acetone: Use a white, lint-free cloth or cotton ball and dampen it with acetone.
Before you start, it’s a good idea to give your bath or shower and the surrounding tiles a good clean to get rid of residual dirt or mould. This can be done with any products you’d usually use to clean your bathroom. On a medium speed, start by running the blade across the bottom of the silicone, followed by the top. Continue to run the blade across until the silicone has fully removed. There are various solvents you can use to remove silicone from tile. But again, this isn’t as effective for fully removing silicone as you’ll often be left with chunks of stubborn silicone. Therefore, a sufficient amount of elbow grease and time is required.Follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding cure time, and avoid disturbing the sealant until it is fully cured.
Peel Off the Softened Silicone: After heating, use a scraper or a razor blade to remove the softened silicone, ensuring you do not burn yourself or damage the tiles.Ensure Complete Dryness: Ensure the tiles are completely dry before reapplying silicone or other adhesives Should you get a silicone/caulk removal tool? Definitely. They are a great addition when removing silicone or caulk and should be in any DIYers tool kit and they only cost around the same price as a London pint — or for non drinkers, two coffees. Apply silicone cleaner to less visual area as a trial. If OK apply to residual areas and leave to soak.
