First, let’s borrow a section from Start Competing: Chaos Space Marines and talk about the army, and its strengths and weaknesses. Some of them openly worship the Chaos powers and have dedicated their mortal lives to pleasing a particular god, while others don’t care for The Great Game and instead are just here to destroy the Imperium and hurt people. So the box is a good value, but you probably won’t want to double up on it, given that you’ll need more Genestealers and not multiple Broodlords and probably not multiple Mawlocs. The Vindicator is also now a great sleeper pick and Land Raiders may finally be usable again, thanks to updated profiles in the new Codex. This book used to have crucial rules for the Chaos Legions, but as of the release of the Codex, it’s no longer valid. Finally if you want to bring anything from the Forge World library of Chaos models, such as the Kytan Ravager, Blood Slaughterer of Khorne, or the Hellforged dreadnoughts, you need this book. Space Wolves don’t have Troop Scouts, which makes Intercessors even more useful for them and the Primaris Battle Leader is a fine HQ to have.

Chaos Space Marine armies can run Plague Marines, Rubric Marines, and Berzerkers, and these each have some interesting play in the army. Often, chaos legions will ride into battle alongside daemons, or with the support of the great towering war machines who have also turned traitor – Chaos Knights. If you’re going Night Lords, this is also a time to add a unit or two of Raptors and maybe a unit of Warp Talons. If you need another squad to meet detachment requirements then this is perfect as you can make 2 squads out of this one box. The value of the individual boxes varies pretty wildly – both in terms of the savings on offer and in terms of the in-game points they represent.

The combined abilities of their marksman bolt carbines and Siege Masters Warlord Trait will mean that for each hit roll of a 6, your Imperial Fists Infiltrators will score one automatic wound and an extra hit! For most players, the Start Collecting box (with the Shadowspear models) is a pretty good deal, and a great starting point regardless of which legion you’re playing. Overall, it’s an OK box for anyone looking to start a Daemons army, and more bang for your buck than most of the others, even with less in savings. Today, we’re looking at a few examples of how you can add to these units to help turn your set into a thematic Battalion Detachment ready to join your wider collection or engage in larger battles as an army in its own right. Known for their stealth tactics and use of Cultist forces seeded and outfitted ahead of their arrival, Alpha Legion work well with most units thanks to being more difficult to hit from a distance, helping them close the gaps.

It’s still a great boxed set to start building off of, but some of the savings are mitigated by the fact that you probably won’t want a Tech-Priest Dominus in your army. Aggressors are a surprisingly good pick for Space Wolves, who really like using the Lone Wolf Stratagem on them when opponents can only wipe out 2/3 of the squad with their new profiles. There’s some cool stuff in there, but it’s not a book that you absolutely need – you can run a perfectly great Chaos army using just the units in the Codex. It comes with a Master of Possession, 10 Chaos Marines, a Venomcrawler, 2 Possessed, and 2 Obliterators.

I can’t stress enough that this is going to cause you short-term wallet shock and long-term disappointment as which units and strategies are “good” changes, but then you probably already knew that. Squads of Scions and Tauroxes are pretty much all there is to have for the Tempestus, and the Scion kit is a dual one which lets you build the Tempestor Prime and a Command Squad too, and is full of cool bits. It’s a much better balanced box than that one, too, with potentially two squads of Deathwatch Veterans as Troops and a Venerable Dreadnought included, which are always useful. Like the new Start Collecting: Chaos Space Marines box, it’s a bit hard to evaluate this one effectively because it’s currently the only place to get Suppressors, which are an insanely good unit for Iron Hands and, to a lesser extent, Imperial Fists armies. You’ll want a Dark Apostle and a Master of Possession if you’re running them, and likely a daemon engine or two in addition to your possessed. Would definitely purchase products sold by this seller in the future due to the quality and service provided.You know you’re a master of infiltration when you can sneak up on the enemy line wearing the vibrant colours of the Imperial Fists. Some of them are a fantastic start to an army, and some of them almost are an army – the Chaos Space Marines box especially is something that could form the core of a 1,000pt list quite happily. If you started with the Combat Patrol, this isn’t a bad next step, and it’ll take you to about 1,500 points with some small tweaks. Not like the morally ambiguous, could-be-seen-as-the-heroes-depending-on-your-point-of-view bad guys but the Capital V, mustache-twirling villains of the setting. Add a Lord Discordant or two and some daemon engines, then support them with Obliterators and Havocs, and protect them with Chaos Cultists who can hold objectives and act as fuel for the Cannon Fodder Stratagem.
